This course provides an overview of the inflammatory process and the process of tissue repair following injury. The three distinct phases of inflammation and tissue repair will be discussed. The major chemical mediators of inflammation and their effects will be covered. The inflammation and tissue healing process in specific musculoskeletal tissues, including bone, muscle, tendon, ligament, and cartilage, will be discussed.

Chapters & learning objectives

Injury and Inflammation

1. Injury and Inflammation

This chapter will cover the process of inflammation, which is a necessary stage in tissue healing and repair. The cardinal signs of inflammation and the mechanisms behind their occurrence will be explained.

Chemical Mediators of the Inflammatory Process

2. Chemical Mediators of the Inflammatory Process

This chapter will investigate more closely the chemical substances that are involved with the inflammatory process. The derivations of these chemical mediators will be discussed in order to better understand their function and how they contribute to the overall healing process following tissue injury. The relationship between chemical mediators of inflammation and the mechanism of action of the anti-inflammatory medications, including NSAIDs and corticosteroids, will be discussed. The difference between acute and chronic inflammation will also be discussed.

Proliferation and Maturation Phases of Tissue Healing: Epithelial Tissues

3. Proliferation and Maturation Phases of Tissue Healing: Epithelial Tissues

This chapter will look more closely at the proliferation and maturation phases of wound healing and repair in epithelial tissues. The key events in each of these stages will be discussed.

Proliferation and Maturation Phases of Tissue Healing: Musculoskeletal Tissues

4. Proliferation and Maturation Phases of Tissue Healing: Musculoskeletal Tissues

This chapter will look more closely at the proliferation and maturation phases of wound healing and tissue repair for musculoskeletal tissues, including bone, tendon, ligament, muscle, and cartilage. Healing potential and healing times for each of these connective and muscular tissues will be discussed.
