This course presents ideas for treatment of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) and correlates home program recommendations to the unique neurotoxic effects of chemotherapeutic agents. This course discusses the impact of our word choices and offers suggestions for use of language that is calming and restorative. Emphasis is placed on clinical reasoning to assist in the development of individualized and creative treatment plans aimed at normalizing sensation and function. This intermediate-level course presents a variety of treatment suggestions for sensory stimulation, active range of motion, nerve and tendon slides/glides, edema control, and manual therapy. This course is informational to nurses and is applicable to occupational therapists and physical therapists in a variety of settings including inpatient and outpatient hospitals, outpatient private practices, skilled nursing facilities, long-term care, home health, and hospice environments.
Learning Objectives
- Correlate autonomic nervous system responses to militaristic metaphors about cancer experiences
- Integrate sensory queries into the treatment process
- Select sensory stimulation treatment interventions for CIPN
- Determine therapeutic home program dosage including sensory stimulation for patients with CIPN
- Determine if the patient appears to have subclinical edema
- Prepare a home program to address ADL and IADL deficits due to CIPN

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Our Word Choices and Listening
This chapter discusses our word choices with cancer patients and describes some of the autonomic responses to certain militaristic metaphors about cancer. It also addresses the importance of listening. These themes are important foundations for therapeutic conversations throughout the treatment process.
2. General Treatment Recommendations and Sensory Stimulation
This chapter provides general treatment recommendations for CIPN, explains the importance of posture on CIPN symptomatology, and identifies ideas and guidelines for sensory stimulation for patients with CIPN. This material is an important basis for creating a home program for patients with CIPN.
3. AROM, Nerve and Tendon Glides/Slides, Edema Control, Manual Therapy
This chapter describes CIPN home program components of AROM, nerve and tendon slides/glides, edema control, and manual therapy. It also explains the relevance of subclinical edema to symptom status in patients with CIPN. This content is important because it fosters thoughtful selections of personalized home programs for patients with CIPN.
