This course provides a history of intravenous therapy and how it has evolved through the years. The different types of IV access lines will be discussed, differentiating between a peripheral IV and a central line. Common veins for IV placement will be discussed, with a look into the nursing scope of practice for IV therapy. Specific uses for the peripheral IVs, Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICCs), and central lines will also be addressed.

1. History of Intravenous Therapy
This chapter will cover a brief history of the evolution of IV therapy and how it has progressed through the centuries. The importance of this chapter is to bring awareness to the need for IV therapy, recognizing that it is a nursing specialty field. The evolution of IV catheters will also be discussed.
2. Types of IV Access Devices
When inserting, assessing, or administering IV medications, it is important to know the different types of lines that are available. This chapter will present the different types of lines and what types can be inserted without supervision within the nurse's scope of practice.
3. Peripheral IV Sites and Central Line Sites
Knowing the vein the IV is being inserted into is not only important for documentation but also for the administering of medications. This session will help the nurse to recognize the different veins for accessing.
