Nowhere is the intersection of breathing and swallowing more important than in critically ill patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). This course will explore the complex interrelationships between ARDS and swallow dysfunction. It will provide clinicians with tools to identify patients with dysphagia and strategies to improve swallow function, with a goal of reducing complications and improving survival and health outcomes.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Dysphagia in ARDS: Why Do We Care?
Chapter 1 will examine the relationships between swallowing dysfunction and negative outcomes in patients with ARDS. Impacts of dysphagia and ARDS, including pneumonias, tracheostomy, and ICU-acquired weakness, will be included.
2. Dysphagia in ARDS: What Does It Look Like?
This chapter will explore the specific characteristics of dysphagia in patients with ARDS, including breathing-swallow discoordination, tracheostomy impacts, and risk of aspiration.
3. Dysphagia in ARDS: How Can We Identify It?
The characteristics typically associated with dysphagia in ARDS will be examined in order to ensure early identification and to assist with prevention of negative outcomes and prolonged ICU stays.
4. Dysphagia in ARDS: How Can We Help?
In chapter 4, clinicians will be provided with compensatory strategies and airway management techniques for implementation with individuals with ARDS.
