This course gives healthcare professionals foundational knowledge of implicit or unconscious bias, including a definition of this type of bias and a history of its many origins. The course provides examples of implicit bias in everyday life as well as in healthcare settings. Clinicians will learn ways to debias and become aware of the impact of a person’s behavior versus intent. With this information, providers can improve relationships with patients and, ultimately, health outcomes.

1. Foundational Language
Unconscious or implicit bias is part of human neuropsychology, and its impact can be harmful. This chapter explains what implicit bias is and discusses the difference between unconscious and conscious bias. It also describes the way society constructs and sustains collective beliefs, assumptions, and expectations to help people make sense of their environment.
2. Where Does Implicit Bias Come From?
Implicit bias mainly comes from socialization. This chapter also discusses the way social construction informs and perpetuates unconscious bias and provides examples of cultural origins of unconscious bias.
3. How Does Implicit Bias Show Up in Healthcare?
This chapter highlights different kinds of implicit bias based on people’s identities and how these can appear in healthcare. Included are research and examples that show ways that bias can influence health disparities. The chapter also talks about intersectionality and how it can impact a patient’s healthcare.
4. What You Can Do to Debias
This chapter introduces a five-step process for debiasing and explains each step. In addition, it addresses how to apply critical consciousness to work toward equitable environments in healthcare and society.
