This course gives information to healthcare professionals about health disparities between the general population and communities that experience marginalization. Examples of intersectional health disparities and definitions of foundational language are included. The course addresses some of the causes of health inequities, including implicit bias and social determinants of health. The course concludes with tools that providers can use to recognize and address health disparities that may be occurring in their healthcare setting.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. What Are Health Disparities?
This chapter defines core terms, such as social determinants of health, health disparities, and intersectionality, that are important to understanding the content of this course. The five intersectional domains of the social determinants of health play a large role in health disparities. The chapter also describes examples of health disparities and intersectionality.
2. Contributions of Implicit Bias and Social Determinants of Health
This chapter focuses on implicit or unconscious bias, and how it leads to health disparities is the focus. It includes examples of implicit bias in healthcare. In addition, it gives examples of the ways that social determinants of health impact patient care, including a case study about accessing telemedicine during the coronavirus pandemic.
3. Recognizing and Addressing Health Disparities
Tools are available to recognize and address health disparities in your healthcare setting. These include several approaches: applying critical consciousness, amplifying patient voice, and speaking up in the moment.
