Treating the cervical spine makes a number of clinicians nervous because of the perceived risk associated with the region. In 2020, the International Federation of Orthopedic Manipulative Physical Therapists Incorporated (IFOMPT) updated their cervical framework for performing a risk assessment for the safety of using manual therapy to treat the cervical spine. This microlearning module will use a patient case to apply concepts of the 2020 IFOMPT cervical framework to perform a risk assessment.

1. Risk Assessment for Cervical Spine Manipulation
In this course, a patient experiencing right-sided neck pain and headaches will be examined. The patient fits treatment for manipulation to the cervical spine, but the physical therapist is unsure of their risk profile for this intervention. This course will go over the 2020 IFOMPT cervical framework, including premanipulative holds and the correlation to cardiovascular disease, as it relates to this patient.
