Are you or your team challenged with coding the Section GG mobility items accurately? This course will support clinicians by providing clinical training to ensure standardized (that is, consistent and accurate) Section GG mobility assessments for clinicians working in all post-acute care settings. Inaccuracies with both assessment and documentation can negatively impact your quality outcome scores and ultimately your payment. This course is ideal for nurses, therapists, and other clinicians who are working in the inpatient rehabilitation facility, long-term care hospital, skilled nursing, and/or home health settings.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. The Rating Scale and Coding Tips
This chapter will describe the rating scale used to score the Section GG mobility items. Understanding how to use the scale and when to use (or not use) the “activity not attempted” codes is important to the success of your outcomes.
2. Item Representing Eating: GG0130A
While eating is an everyday event for most people, the assessment of eating abilities in post-acute care is an important piece of ensuring safe and effective care. This chapter will review the item, its definition, and what it is intended to assess. Tips for assessing it accurately will be shared.
3. Item Representing Oral Hygiene: GG0130B
Oral hygiene, an often overlooked aspect of the Section GG self-care assessment, is important to overall health. This chapter will define the element and its variations. Tips for applying the rating score correctly will also be discussed.
4. Item Representing Toilet Hygiene: GG0130C
Toilet hygiene is an item that some clinicians struggle with due to the challenges with knowing when the task starts and when it stops. This chapter will look closer at the item definition and discuss how to accurately assess and code it.
5. Items Representing Wash Upper Body and Shower/Bathe Self: GG0130D and GG0130E
These two items are similar but different. Washing the upper body is an activity assessed in only one of the four post-acute care settings, while showering/bathing oneself is assessed in the other three. This chapter will discuss the keys to assessing both items accurately.
6. Items Representing Upper Body Dressing and Lower Body Dressing: GG0130F and GG0130G
Being able to dress oneself is an important component of being independent and returning to the community. This chapter will review the important aspects of assessing dressing, including the use of equipment, braces, and orthotics.
7. Item Representing Putting On/Taking Off Footwear: GG0130H
The last self-care item in Section GG assesses one’s ability to put on and take off footwear. Clinicians often have questions about what counts as footwear and how to determine just how much assistance was provided. This chapter will discuss those things and share some tips for accurately coding GG0130H.
