There are many different motor learning strategies a therapist can use to enhance patients’ ability to learn new skills. This course will explore four motor learning strategies, the most effective teaching methods targeted to the specific neural structure involved, and eight additional effective ways to enhance motor learning and improve patient outcomes. When these strategies are used in combination, treatment sessions as well as long-term results will be improved. Compensation strategies for cognitive impairment will be presented. This course utilizes lecture, demonstration, and multiple patient video examples to enhance learning. This course is Part 2 in a five-part series encompassing the anatomy and treatment for patients with neurodegenerative diseases, including multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease.

1. Motor Learning in Patients With Neurodegenerative Conditions
Familiar principles of motor learning are discussed, with new insights and current research. This chapter presents explanations and demonstrations of the four motor learning strategies, with patient video examples for clarification. Specific attention is given to the importance of repetition and effective instruction.
2. Treatment Specific Considerations for Persons Aging With MS, PD, and ALS
A variety of interventions, when layered together in treatment, can enhance outcomes within treatment sessions and beyond for long-term improvement and function. Eight concepts for motor learning will be discussed and presented, with demonstrations and patient video examples for clarity.
3. Cognition in Persons With Degeneration
The incidence of cognitive decline is significant in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease. This chapter will discuss compensation strategies for cognitive impairment in these populations.
