Disease-modifying treatment interventions enable patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) to live longer. Although this disease cannot be cured, it can be managed more effectively. Using lecture, demonstration, and patient video examples, this course provides innovative interventions for patients with MS to offer them improved functionality. This course gives the therapist up-to-date evidence for differential diagnosis and medications for disease management. It also presents tests and measurements to effectively track response to therapy. This course is part 4 in a five-part series encompassing the anatomy and treatment for patients with neurodegenerative diseases, including MS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease.

1. Anatomy, Pathophysiology, and Differential Diagnosis in MS
In order to provide optimal interventions founded on effective research for patients with MS, the therapist needs to be able to understand the degenerative process of the nervous system. Differential diagnosis will be appreciated by valuing the anatomy and pathophysiology of the disease process.
2. Functional Tests and Measures to Guide Treatment Specific to Persons Aging With MS
The Academy of Neurologic Physical Therapy and MS-EDGE performance-based and self-report measures to track the patient's response to therapy are presented in this chapter. This chapter stresses the importance of walking speed to measure safety and function in the home and community, with patient video examples to enhance learning.
3. Interventions for Persons Aging With MS
In order to address the specific functional limitations of the patient with MS, the therapist must apply research-centered interventions customized to meet patient-centered needs. Throughout this chapter, there are multiple creative intervention patient video examples to apply the principles learned to your clinical practice.
4. Medication Considerations for Patients with MS
This chapter provides a review of disease-modifying medications, as well as medications to address the sequelae of the disease. Additionally, it identifies alternative interventions for addressing MS.
