This course will assess the subsets of functional dysphagia and which should be considered, as these may modify the practitioner's approach. This includes phagophobia, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, and muscle tension dysphagia. Historical and modern perspectives of treatment for functional neurological disorders and functional dysphagia will be reviewed. Multidisciplinary approaches will be examined. This includes medication, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulus, and esophageal dilations. The role of a mental health psychologist will be highlighted, including psychoeducation, arousal modification, cognitive behavioral therapy, and hypnotherapy.
