Treatment of functional dysphagia by an SLP can be successful and rewarding. With our support and guidance, patients can often improve their symptoms, return to a regular diet, eliminate abnormal swallowing behaviors, and enjoy eating with friends and family again. This course will review specific therapeutic techniques used by an SLP to manage patients with functional dysphagia. This includes how to educate and counsel patients regarding their new diagnosis and possible risk factors. Relaxation and muscle tension reducing techniques will be highlighted. Finally, swallow strategy training using a food hierarchy with biofeedback will be demonstrated.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Education and Counseling
This chapter will review how to educate and counsel a person with functional dysphagia on their diagnosis. This includes the inclusionary and exclusionary components of the diagnosis and possible risk factors that may be contributing to its development and maintenance.
2. Relaxation and Muscle Tension Reduction Techniques
Muscle tension and psychological factors may contribute to a patient’s symptoms of functional dysphagia. Specific therapeutic techniques to reduce tension and encourage relaxation will be demonstrated.
3. Swallow Strategy Training and Food Hierarchy
SLPs have the unique ability to work with functional dysphagia at its core, addressing the swallowing abnormalities head-on. This chapter will demonstrate how to structure your therapy and goals to work through a hierarchy of foods while practicing swallowing strategies. Biofeedback tools will highlighted, specifically surface electromyography.
