This course helps to address some of the educational needs and technical requirements for patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation. It does so by focusing on the understanding of airway management and the technical aspects of home ventilator equipment. Patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation require intense resources coordinated amongst an often-fragmented healthcare system; this course highlights the importance of nuanced, team-based care that is tailored to the patient’s individual needs. Developing a basic understanding of tracheostomy and airway management as they relate to care of the patient with prolonged mechanical ventilation is key to the long-term success of prolonged mechanical ventilation patients. This course will analyze common clinical challenges and respiratory emergencies in patients with chronic ventilator dependence using case-based discussions.

1. Airway Management in Patients With Chronic Tracheostomy
Knowledge of tracheostomy tubes and their care is essential for the care of patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation. Tracheostomy tubes provide a stable airway and facilitate and minimize need for sedation and analgesia. Nuances of tracheostomy tube changes, swallowing, physical therapy, and other care aspects are best addressed in an interdisciplinary environment that concentrates on the appropriate objectives and realistic outcome goals of the patient.
2. Putting It All Together
Prior to a patient’s transition to home/rehab, it is preferable to help the patient adapt to home respiratory equipment ahead of time. It can be helpful to have a good understanding of operation and characteristics of home respiratory equipment. Team-based care and coordination are imperative for patients with prolonged mechanical ventilation, including sharing goals and coeducating healthcare teams across the care continuum.
